Religimortis

There are some things that we in the ministry just do not need to get hung up on.

For instance: When a person is born again, it’s the most wonderful thing that can ever happen!  However, soon after you experience the new birth you began to hear people say things like this, Now that you’re born again, you must die to self! What they mean is, began to deny yourself certain desires. Things that maybe you used to indulge in. However, if you’re going to die to self, there’s something that you would do well to take heed to. Always remember that after each death someone must quickly position the body in the way it should be. If you wait to long there is a thing called rigor mortis that will set up in that body that will make it very hard to do!  Rigor mortis renders its victim stiff and rigid. It freezes their facial appearance in the look they had at death.

When a Christian begins to die to self, as some say, after that death if someone mature in the Lord does not step in and show them the righteousness, joy, and peace in the Holy Ghost what I call RELIGIMORTIS will began to set up! It will begin very quickly to cause their face to freeze in the religious frown they had when they died to themselves! Which is usually the frown of resistance! This frown can become permanent if not shaped quickly! It can turn into a look that can be recognized at a glance! If not dealt with it can render its victim so stiff they will even wear the same drab clothes for the rest of their life! Even their voices will change. They find themselves going from expressions like,  God is Absolutely Good! to, WELL BROTHERRRR YOUUU KNOWWW GAWD ISSS A HHHOLY GAWD!

One of the most dangerous things that can happen when Religimortis sets in is that you can find yourself as Christian tending to judge other’s salvation based on your experience!  In other words, if others don’t act or dress, or talk the way you do, or if they don’t go to the same kind of church you do, then they are not saved!  This is dangerous because what bothered you before you got saved may not have been other people’s hang ups at all.

In other words, you may have had a problem with alcohol before you were saved. Therefore, you can’t allow yourself to be around it very much at all. However someone else was never even really tempted to drink and could stay in a room full of it all day and never think about drinking it!   But, because of your past, you may find yourself saying that person cannot be right or they would not be doing this or that!

Religimortis is what had set in on most of the religious leaders during the time Jesus was on the earth. Jesus would go sit and eat with sinners, Publicans, people who drank, etc. and the religious leaders said he had a devil and that he was a drunk! They would call him a sinner, yet he would raise the dead right in front of them!   I remember once I was talking to a very good friend I knew.  He has since gone to heaven.  I was really expressing my admiration for certain contemporary Christian artist. This particular artist is very famous and has a lot of dancers in their show - very tasteful I might add.  My friend said to me that he didn’t think much of this particular artist’s ministry because he used some very unorthodox methods. I said to him, Brother, when they gave the invitation at the end of the concert over 1,000 people responded!  His answer was, Well there might have been 10,000 if he hadn’t of did all the other stuff!

Religimortis rationalizes this way!

I remember once while praying I heard the Lord in my spirit say, I’m not nearly as put out with things as you are!   This was very surprising to me.  I settled down to pray some more and I heard it again; I’m not nearly as put out with things as you are! This really got my attention! One thing that I never did like to hear even before I was born again was someone taking the Lord’s name in vain! He brought me to the realization that it didn’t bother him for the same reason it bothered me. It bothered me just like it would if someone cussed my mama! It bothered the Lord because it was a lie!  He doesn’t cause damnation! He’s the life giver! It’s profanity because it’s a lie!

Religion gets hung up on people’s hair, people’s looks and people’s styles of music. I’ve heard people say you better come out from among the world! What they actually mean is do not play any music that sounds like the world! Do not wear any clothes that look like theirs etc.

Here’s something to think about while meditating on thoughts like this, In music a C Chord is a C Chord!  For instance: If you were to sing and play in say the key of C. the old gospel song, The Great Speckled Bird, after the first line or so you could substitute the lyrics with the country song “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels” and never change the melody at all! Therefore, if you do away with that music used on “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels”, then you will automatically throw away The Great Speckled Bird!  It’s not the music that so much changes a song:  it’s the Words! Words are the containers of the force pushing a song! A lot of positive country songs have much more of a message of good news than a whole bunch of songs labeled gospel!

The Apostle Paul said for others sake he was killed all the day long. If you study Paul’s life it was always more for the other believer’s sake rather than for his own! For example Paul said, If eating meat caused his brother to stumble, then Paul said in First Corinthians 8:13 he wouldn’t do that. Not that it was a sin for to eat it. Paul said for thy sake we are killed all the day long. Dying to self for the believer is really renewing your mind daily to the Word of God!

Being a living sacrifice is what God wants - not a dead stiff one! And remember if your going to die to self, please don’t let Religimortis set in.   Because once it does, you’ll put it on display and make the rest of us come and view it!  Go on and resurrect and let the light of God shine through you!
